A Sewer Line Break at the Bangor Mall has been Leaking Human Waste
The Bangor Mall sure ain't what it used to be.
It's no secret that the Bangor Mall was once the social capital of the entire region. It wasn't just a place to do your shopping, it was also the main center of activity for young people. There was no place for teens to really go back then. So in the absence of anything better to do, you'd often just head to the mall.

Those kinds of trips mostly considered walking around with groups of your friends, hoping to run into other groups of friends. These days at the mall, it's all but a ghost town. There are still some solid, stalwart businesses in there taking advantage of ample parking and cheap rent, but it's not the shopping mecca it was when I was a kid.
The Mall currently has multiple lawsuits pending from the city of Bangor.
Most recently, the mall has been under fire by the city of Bangor for multiple code violations. They cited things like a leaky roof, horrible parking lot, and dilapidated signage among them. Well now, it's getting much more serious. According to WABI, a poorly maintained sewer line has been leaking human waste.
Worse, the waste has been leaking in the nearby Penjajawoc Stream. As far back as May of this year, the city informed the Mall's owners, the Namdar Realty Group, that this issue was happening. Since then, the owners have done basically nothing to rectify this issue or any of the others.
So what happens next?
The city has filed an additional lawsuit to see that this issue is addressed immediately. It will also likely lead to thousands of dollars in fines, as well as costly mitigation expenses. This will likely add to the burden by the current owners, who are likely not getting rich on this mall.

Will it close? Hard to say, that's up to the owners. Although, one would suspect the city will have to take more drastic measures if nothing is done. But with multiple code violations, and ones as serious as human waste flowing into streams, it's probably safe to say the mall has an uncertain future at best. Only time will tell...
