We always like to recognize our military men and women from Maine who are out there in the world protecting our freedom.

Today we heard from the Navy Office of Community Outreach, and they informed us of Lt. John McAleer, from Orono, who is currently aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey operating in the the Mediterranean Sea.

In the photo above, Lt. John McAleer monitors a map while on the USS Monterery.

An official Navy press release tells us that the USS Monterey is operating with the IKE Carrier Strike Group on a routine deployment in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national interests and security in Europe and Africa.

Below is a photograph of the USS Monterey off the coast of Albania in the Mediterranean Sea just this past Wednesday, as it was practicing naval maneuvers along side a couple of Albanian coast guard patrol boats.

My father served in the U.S. Navy and then in the Naval Reserves for well over 20 years. He spent time aboard the USS Pringle in the south Pacific during World War II, and also loading bombs onto airplanes while on Okinawa. The Navy will always have a special place in my heart, and my support.

So, we thank Lt. John McAleer of Orono for his service to our country. It's nice to know that people like him from our area are serving in our United States Navy.

LOOK: Stunning vintage photos capture the beauty of America's national parks

Today these parks are located throughout the country in 25 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The land encompassing them was either purchased or donated, though much of it had been inhabited by native people for thousands of years before the founding of the United States. These areas are protected and revered as educational resources about the natural world, and as spaces for exploration.
