The Maine Department of Transportation released a list of work projects yesterday that includes a couple of very big jobs within Brewer.

The Interstate 395 bridge, the span that carries traffic on Wilson Street/Route 1A over the highway's off ramps, will be replaced this year.  The project will cost an estimated $13.5 million, and no exact start date is listed.

Also on the MDOT Work Plan list is the very controversial I-395 extension project. which would extend that highway another 6 miles northeast through the wetland, fields, woods, and current private properties, to Route 9, otherwise known as the airline. That project is listed to start in either 2021 or 2022, at a cost of $57.3 million.

Proponents of the highway say that it would cut back on Route 1A traffic through Holden, especially that created by big rig trucks.  Opponents of the highway worry about the loss of their property, noise from traffic, and the effect on wildlife.
