A new study from the Universities of Kentucky and Maryland showed a glass of wine every day could be the secret to keeping a brighter mind in old age. Oddly enough, the research claims that the benefits only begin to emerge after middle age. Though not 100 percent effective, about 80 per cent of pensioners will do better with a drink, an unlucky 20 per cent will not. Those 20 percent had a DNA gene called APOE e4 which is linked to Alzheimer’s disease and for that 20 % alcohol actually made memory worse.

The study said there were ‘several mechanisms’ that may explain the relationship between alcohol and ability to think clearly.

These include alcohol’s anti-inflammatory properties and the fact that moderate consumption has been known to protect against dementia, stroke, coronary heart disease and Type II diabetes.
