4 New England States are Absolute Black Holes for Winning Gold Medals

You'd think New England would be better about this.

Maybe we're just geared more toward the Winter Olympics? But really, New England is home to some of the most prestigious athletes on the planet among our professional sports teams. So how is it, that in the grand scheme of things, we're least likely to produce any gold medal Olympians?

Maine actually had one in 1984. We're talking about the legendary Joan Benoit Samuelson, who took the gold in the women's marathon that year. She was the favorite going into the race, so while it wasn't a huge surprise, it was still cool to be seen by the world at large, for doing something right, haha. But that's it, so far.

What about the rest of New England?

Well, we actually can brag a bit because we have one. New Hampshire has never brought home a single medal, whereas Massachusetts has had 21 so far. Vermont has done better than us, they've had two medals. Connecticut has done ok with their 9 medals, according to TheSportsGeek.com.

Obviously, they're doing something right in MA and CT. Is it something in the water? My guess is that they just have larger populations, and this leads to stiffer competition at the state level. More competition is going to give you higher performing athletes. But even with MA and their 21 medals, they can't hold a torch to California's 127 medals.

This doesn't mean we have crappy athletes around here. We all know that Cooper Flagg has been causing quite the stir at the Olympic basketball practices. so maybe there's a chance this year, we can break our streak. Regardless, we have great athletes around here, even if they don't make the Olympics.
