The accident took place on Wednesday, November 19th, at 4:30 in the morning. A 2017 GMC Acadia SUV carrying 2 adults and four children (ranging in ages from 7 to 14 years old) was hauling a U-Haul trailer as it headed southbound along the interstate. At one point, investigators believe the trailer became partially detached, and the group pulled over to investigate the situation. However, authorities say part of the trailer remained in the travel lane when the two adults and two of the kids exited the SUV to rehook the trailer to the vehicle.

Maine State Police say that's when another vehicle, a 2015 Audi SUV, came upon the scene and crashed into the GMC and the trailer, killing both of the adults and injuring the two children who were on the outside of the vehicle, along with the two who were inside. The four children were transported to the hospital, along with the driver of the second SUV. All were treated for minor injuries.
