Orono Bog Walk to Remain Closed For the Season

While spring maintenance has been taking place at the Orono Bog Boardwalk, the trails are remaining closed.

In a Facebook post published Thursday, the Orono Bog Boardwalk remains steadfast in keeping the trails closed due to the increased positive cases of COVID-19 and increase in positivity rates:

In the post, the Boardwalk Management team explains that keeping the trails closed is a direct result of increased positive cases and positivity rates here in the State of Maine. They have been keeping an eye on the numbers and state it's still too soon to reopen at this time.  It was not mentioned when the boardwalk could reopen.

The Orono Bog Boardwalk is a local hiking destination in the Bangor area known for it's forest trail and bog views. While you can't visit it now, the Facebook post did share some photos taken recently of what views we are missing right now at the bog, including photos of the eastern skunk cabbage, 'the first flower of spring' and named for it's pungent odor.

While Maine has recently hit a milestone of over 1 million vaccinations delivered recently, new positive cases for COVID-19 continue to rise here in the state.  Last October started an unprecedented increase in new positive cases that peaked in mid-January with a seven-day average of over 600 new COVID cases per day in Maine.  Mid-February saw a steep decline in new positive cases with the autumn/winter wave of new COVID-19 positive cases but, has since started increasing again with a seven-day average of new positive cases at about 450 per day.
