Maine State Representative Mike Michaud is running for Governor, and this morning he announced in a variety of forums that he is gay.

If Michaud wins the race, then he would be Maine's first gay governor.

Already, during this short campaign, groups that support Michaud's opponents had begun making noise about his sexuality.

In the Bangor Daily News and other papers this morning, Michaud said of certain groups, "Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer: “Yes, I am. But why should it matter?”

Michaud says that being a homosexual if just part "of who I am".  He goes on to say, "One thing I do know is that it has nothing to do with my ability to lead the state of Maine.

Representative Michaud, a democrat, a third generation paper worker, worked for Great Northern Paper company for 29 years before entering politics and serving the people of Maine.
