Singer-songwriter Don McLean was arrested early Monday morning on a domestic violence assault charge, according to media reports.

McLean, whose song "American Pie" has become one of the most enduring anthems in rock-and-roll history, was taken to Knox County Jail shortly after his 2 a.m. arrest. He posted $10,000 bail and was released.

McLean, 70, lives in Camden. He is scheduled to appear in Knox County District Court in Rockland on Feb. 22, according to the Penobscot Bay Pilot.

In 2013, he was fined $400 for speeding through a school zone in Rockport.

McLean still performs on occasion including a headlining performance at the 2015 Rockland Lobster Festival.

We'll have more details as they become available.
