UMaine Officials Say Man Suspected in Social Media Threat Located

University of Maine Police have updated their recent alert, stating that there is no active threat to the college community.

UPDATE: University of Maine Police say Afshin Zarechian has been located in Western Maine, with the BMW they suspected he was driving. There's no word about whether he will face any charges. 

The alert was originally sent out over the weekend, when University of Maine Police responded to an alleged threat that had been posted on social media on Saturday. The details of the threat were never released, but it was taken seriously enough to prompt officials to cancel a University of Maine baseball game. Police asked for the public's help locating a suspect, that they said allegedly posted the threat. 20-year-old Afshin Zarechian was believed to be driving a green BMW, with a New Hampshire license plate, RICCH.

Now, UMaine Police say they do not believe there is any active threat on the University community. An investigation, involving several state, local, and federal agencies has turned up no sign of Zarechian in the area, and no indication that the threat was genuine.

In a post on the department's Facebook page, University Police showed their appreciation for the college community's cooperation. Students, staff, and faculty are reminded to always be vigilant of their surroundings and to report anything that seems suspicious.
