If you're traveling between Brunswick and Boston's North Station on-board the Amtrak Downeaster, you can now take along a small pet!

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority says in a recent press release, that after a successful pilot program, small dogs and cats can now travel the popular rail line. The Downeaster was the second route in the country to test the program.

The new rules are that passengers can travel with one cat or one dog only, and it must be in an enclosed carrier on tripsno longer than seven hours in length.  Both the pet and carrier cannot exceed 20 lbs.  There is a $25 surcharge to bring a pet on-board and reservations are required.  More information can be found HERE.

The Amtrak Downeaster also has new "pet friendly packages" available that include overnight stays and stuff like "doggie tours."
