Bangor, Maine Police Department Brings Back Popular Self-Defense Class
The statistics say 1 in 5 Mainers will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. That's according to the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
While that is a sobering statistic, one local law enforcement agency is bringing back a class aimed at helping those who find themselves in aggressive sexual situations, have a literal fighting chance.
Last November, the Bangor Police Department held an in-person "Rape Aggression Defense" or R.A.D. class. The purpose of these classes is to help arm women, in particular, with the skills and confidence they need to fight back and escape dangerous situations.
According to the Bangor Police Department's Public Information Officer, Jason McAmbley, due to the high interest in last fall's class, the Department is holding another round of classes this month.

"The cost for this class is $25.00, but once you take and complete the course you have a FREE lifetime return and practice opportunity. Course attendance is all three days beginning on April 25th, 5pm to 8:30 p.m., April 26th, from 1pm to 4:30 p.m., and April 30th, from 5pm to 8:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so if you’re interested in this opportunity, please send an email to jamie.fanning@bangormaine.gov and get your name on the list."
McAmbley says that if you are interested in attending, but cannot swing the $25 class fee, they have scholarships available. All you have to do is reach out.
He describes the atmosphere of the classes as supportive and encouraging. But there is a limit to how many can attend these classes, so reach out today if you do have an interest.
