Bangor School Committee Member Charged with Stalking Local Woman
A Bangor man who serves on the city's school committee as well as county treasurer faces several charges after he allegedly harassed a local woman and took over her social media account.
John D. Hiatt, 38, was arrested Friday on charges including aggravated invasion of computer privacy, stalking, harassment and theft.
The alleged victim told police in early May that Hiatt -- an "ex-friend" -- recently became "very angry and upset" during a recent visit. He then took over and manipulated the victim’s social media account without her permission.
Warrant in hand, police searched Hiatt's residence and seized electronic devices on May 6. In recent days, a detective posing as the alleged victim online received "numerous messages" from Hiatt.
Police obtained a warrant for his arrest on Friday, and took Hiatt into custody after pulling over his vehicle on Moosehead Blvd. at about 4 p.m.
Hiatt was taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
Hiatt serves as Penobscot County Treasurer. He also serves on the Bangor School Committee. His term expires in November 2021.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Hiatt told the Bangor Daily News he would not step down from either post and planned to fight the charges.
