Be prepared, because this week is going to be hot!

With temperatures approaching 90 degrees and heat index values in the mid '90s, you're certainly going to want to take it easy outdoors in the hazy hot summer sun.

National Weather Service tells us that both today and Tuesday high temperatures in the Bangor area will be hovering in the mid to upper '80s by the early afternoon, and the heat index looks dangerously high, at times approaching 96.

Look for today to be partly sunny with passing showers and the chance of afternoon thundershower as well.  Factor in the heat index and it may feel like 95 degrees. Partly sunny and hot again Tuesday, with a high of 89 degrees and heat index values as high as 96.  Once again there will be the threat of showers and thundershowers as well. Mostly sunny and hot again Wednesday, with a high of 88.  Then, temps in the mid '80s Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday! After what started out as a cool summer has turned into one of the warmest in Maine ever.

If you're job takes you outdoors this week, the Mayo Clinic give us these tips to prevent heat exhaustion:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, so that your body sweats and and maintains a normal body temperature.
  • Wear loose fitting and lightweight clothing.
  • Wear sunglasses, a hat, and other clothing to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Try to take it easy during the hottest part of the day.

Some symptoms of heat exhaustion include cool, moist skin, heavy sweating, fatigue, dizziness, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, nausea, headache, among others.  If you think that you're experience heat exhaustion, then move to a cooler place, take it easy, and drink plenty of water.
