Mainers Are Likely Getting A Brutal Rate Hike In Their Power Bill
It feels like we're constantly being punished by bills
The last 18 months or so have been unlike any other in our lifetimes. I know that's an overused statement at this point, but it's beyond true. It seems like every time we turn around, there's a new spin on the pandemic that makes you shake your head and wonder if we all lost a bet with god.
People dying in huge numbers, people continuing to get sick, people out of work.... you name it. And during this time, lots of people have been working from home, and just staying home a lot more than usual. More time at home means burning up more electricity. Guess what that means next?
Your power bill is probably about to take a ride into space
Yup, it's true. While a rate hike isn't totally atypical, the amount that it could jump to is scary. Maybe even horrifying. According to the Associated Press, the Maine Utility Commission has proposed an unprecedented hike. To the tune of 60% - 80%. Yes, you read that right. If your bill averages $100 a month, it could easily hit $160 - $180.
Simple math indicates that could be an additional $700 to $1,000 a year. That's absolutely insane. The AP says that rates are going up worldwide, especially with the rise in the cost of natural gas. And according to those in the know, this hike isn't just a possibility, it's almost guaranteed.
Is this kind of hike even legal?
Hard to say. It's basically been fully approved at the state level. Although there will likely be opportunities for folks to offer their opinion, it seems like it may be all over but the shouting. But I tell ya... if this is a foreshadowing of things to come, we're in for a long, cold winter. And beyond.
