The voice was very distinctive, and instantly recognizable.  He wasn't just another celebrity that was proud to call Maine home.  He was a champion of the area.

Jack Perkins, who gained prominence by his work for over 35 years on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, the Biography series on the A&E Network, and by being spoofed on Saturday Night Live, died this past Monday in Florida, where he and his late wife Mary Jo lived.

At one time they both lived off the grid on Bar Island within Mount Desert Narrows off of Bar Harbor.  Mr. Perkins once said that he "gave it all up" for his newfound life on the Island, and who could blame him?

While living on Bar Island, Mr. Perkins wrote a book titled "Finding Moosewood, Finding God: What Happened When a TV Newsman Abandoned His Career for Life on an Island", proclaiming his love of the area.

He also voiced a couple of fabulously produced videos about Acadia National Park, Acadia Always and The Gift Of Acadia.
