Heavy Traffic On Stillwater Saturday Made Worse By Two Crashes On I-95
Traffic on Stillwater Avenue and Hogan Road in Bangor on Saturday was already on the heavy side, thanks to a holiday craft sale and the kick-off of the Holiday shopping season. Two separate accidents involving multiple vehicles on the interstate nearby made things significantly worse.
According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss, State Police were called to the Northbound area of Interstate 95 just before 11 AM Saturday.
"The initial investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling in the passing lane sped up and crossed into the travel lane to take exit 186. That action caused a vehicle in the right lane to brake quickly to avoid a collision. As a result, this created a chain reaction crash involving three vehicles that blocked both the passing and travel lanes."
Moss says that the initial vehicle that had sped up to take the exit, managed to avoid becoming involved in that crash but failed to stop altogether when the first crash occurred.
She said that the first crash spurred a second crash involving three more vehicles, which resulted in some minor injuries.
Traffic along the interstate was backed up for an hour or so, while crews from the Bangor Fire Department, and both Bouchard's and Union Street Towing worked to clear the vehicles from the roadway. As a result of that backup, most roads going in and out of the area of Stillwater Avenue and Hogan Road were heavily congested throughout the lunchtime hours.
Moss says the crash remains under investigation.
