The song was written by Alan Merrill who recorded it with his band 'Arrows' back in 1975. He said in an interview with song facts, he wrote it as "a knee-jerk response to The Rolling Stones, It’s only Rock ‘n Roll (but I like it). The song? ‘I Love Rock ‘n Roll.  In 1976 Joan Jett saw  the Arrows perform "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" on their weekly UK television series 'Arrows' while she was touring England with The Runaways.  She actually released the song twice, first 1979 as a B-side of "You Don't Own Me". Then again in 1981, with The Blackhearts and that’s when it caught fire going all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
