After a four year wait.... Maine's recreational cannabis sales begin today.

Once upon a time when I was a younger lad, we used to talk about this day like it would take place in a mythical time in a far away land. The general thought was, that if weed were legal, it would be due to some kind of mass enlightenment. Not in the middle of the craziest time in our country's history, yet here we are.

But, 2020 has had all sorts of fun in store for us, hasn't it? Although, one would have to admit, after an insane year of coronavirus and massively divisive politics, legal cannabis may be just what the world needs to calm itself down a little. If one thing might bring a bit of peace across the aisles, it might be a peace pipe full of the green stuff.

Green loving Mainers have been waiting for four years for this moment. Everyone rejoiced back in 2016 with the passage of the law, only to be frustrated by the state government's political jockeying of the implementation of the law. It's been a bureaucratic nightmare this whole time, but that's all over as of today.

Now, there's still a few things to keep in mind before you run celebrating in the streets. Well, first off, you can't celebrate in the streets. Even though you may fearlessly possess it, just like alcohol, it's still illegal to consume in public. Also, you must be at least 21 years of age. So you youngsters will just have to simmer down and wait.

If you are of age, you can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of flower, and up to five grams in concentrates. If you're buying them together, there is a bundle limit, according to WGME - TV13. And if you feel like a bit of light reading, you can always go to the state's website and check out all the rules and regs yourself, here.

At the end of the day, it will bring a lot of tax revenue into the state that has been going directly into the black market for years, other than the state's medical program, which is still very active. It remains to be seen what incentives there would be for maintaining a medical card now that it's legal, but we'll keep our eyes on it.

This is a big deal, don't even think it isn't. Maine is still not in the majority, though more states seem to legalize every year. But, it was voted in by the people, and our state has finally, this time anyway, listened to it's voters and did what they asked. That's rare in this political landscape these days.

See... weed actually can bring together the unlikeliest of friends. Even in politics.
