Last month Big Apple’s location on Wilson Street at Acme Road in Brewer closed. It was announced that the location was being renovated.

The demolishing of the buildings has begun, and the gas pumps are gone. The store, the car wash and the C.N. Brown fuel facility office are next.

And although it will be very interesting to see what the new buildings will look like and how they plan to use the many square feet on that lot, the change in the landscape also brings mixed emotions.

When the plans were announced last month, people note that sometimes change is a lot more than just something new, it stirs the memories of the past too.

There were comments on social media like:

There goes my youth. My Dad went to that station for gas years ago and I went with him. One more thing from the past is now gone.

And it stirred up memories of times gone by for others too,

I had a part time job there years ago as a teenager.

We anticipate the next phase and look forward to what the new configuration will look like.

The new facility is expected to take 5 to 7 months to complete, with the target of re-opening in early 2024.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
