A Leeds man is charged with murder for the death of a man who's been missing for nearly a year.

Leeds Man Arrested for Murder of Windham Man

Joseph Chute, 30, of Leeds was arrested on Friday evening without incident.

Family Members Reported Jackson Missing Nearly a Year Ago

He's accused of killing Alex Jackson, 34, of Windham, whose family reported him missing, with no contact, on May 12, 2023. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says family members told authorities it was not typical of Jackson to go so long without communicating with anyone.

Over the past ten months, law enforcement agencies in Maine and New Hampshire have investigated the incident. On Friday, March 29th, an arrest warrant was obtained for Joseph Chute on a charge of murder. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.

Police Have Not Revealed What Led Them to Chute

Jackson's body has never been recovered. Officials have not commented about what led them to arrest Chute or what his motives may have been. Chute is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday, April 1, 2024.
