It's truly the definition of a double edged sword.

Because, for those that aren't massive fans of winter for whatever reason -- hate the snow, hate the cold, hate the people that drive like absolute suck in the snow, or quite possibly all the above -- it's something we haven't experienced for a long while.

But, on the flip side, at the end of the day -- it's also kind of gross.

Yarmouth Maine Boats

They haven't been so much noticeable over the last handful of months, and aren't even really that noticeable at the time of this writing, mainly because even though the weather has been a bit warmer throughout the state lately, it's still not actually time yet.

All of the boats anchored at the multiple marinas throughout Yarmouth, Maine. But while they're not noticeable because it's not time to drop them in the water and anchor them in slips yet, there is one thing starting to become very noticeable in that area.

Royal River

Based on a Reddit post back in December about Maine, it was apparent really briefly on an unusually warm day, but we're getting into that time of year where it'll be surrounding us nonstop.

The stank of the Royal River, particularly while driving on 295 in Yarmouth.

According to some comments on that Reddit post mentioned above, including one by a woman named Olivia, the stank -- which can really only be described as some horrible fish that's been left out in the sun too long, then brought to small business office and microwaved for a few -- is all because of the mixture of warm weather, low tide, and the salt marshes.

And while it may smell terrible for a brief couple of moments while driving up or down 295 in Yarmouth, it's a sign that spring -- which officially arrives on Tuesday, March 19, at 11:06p, according to WGME meteorologist Emily Santom -- is well on its way to Maine.
