The summers are often short and sweet in Maine and because of that, people who live, work and play in Vacationland need to make the most of them.

Sometimes making the most of the summer in Maine is by pretending you've actually transported yourself to somewhere tropical.

Somewhere with palm trees, an aqua ocean and a soft sand beach. A place where the drinks are fruity and the cares have gone right out the window.

Somewhere like a tiki bar. And if you happen to be in midcoast Maine this summer, you'll find that tropical destination in the woods.

Camp DeForest plans on doing that by opening a tiki bar called Tiki Scout.

The cocktail bar will feature tiki-inspired drinks, likely made with rum, as well as a menu of pupu platters and other summer camp style favorites.

Tiki Scout will serve as a weekend destination and plans to be open Thursday through Saturday nights only.

There is no grand opening date set for Tiki Scout as of this writing.

Portland, Maine, Once Had a Tiki Bar That People Still Miss

More than a decade ago, Portland, Maine, was home to its own tiki bar called Rhum. The bar itself was probably ahead of its time but it's still fondly remembered by those who frequented it.

Rhum did exactly what Tiki Scout hopes to do. Transport people from a mundane setting into the feeling of the tropics.

Rhum used tvs to play videos of the ocean and wildlife and allowed creative decor, glassware and an expansive drink menu to do the rest of the job in taking people directly to someplace that felt warmer, happier and care free.

Rhum closed permanently in 2017.
