MEMA Says Getting To Know Neighbors Beneficial To Maine’s Elderly
It's not just about being asking for a cup of sugar anymore.
Getting to know the people who live around us is not only something that offers us the potential of friendship but also something that offers us the potential of protection in emergencies.
According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, it's beneficial for older folks to get to know their neighbors so that when emergency situations occur, there's a support system nearby.
"Building strong connections with your neighbors can make a big difference in an emergency."
When neighbors have established bonds or relationships with those around them, the younger members of the community will often step up and check on the older ones.
MEMA encourages seniors to share emergency plans and contact information with neighbors and even build neighborhood preparedness plans together.
The National Institute on Aging says neighbors can provide crucial support with everything from planning to packing to transporting and even with communicating with friends and family. Creating an emergency plan is the first step."
"Discuss your plan and needs with friends, family, caregivers, and neighbors. Identify specific people you trust and who would be willing to help in a crisis. "
The website 4theSeniors reiterates the importance of having help nearby in disastrous situations.
"Seniors with limited mobility may require assistance during evacuation. This may involve enlisting the help of family members, neighbors, or emergency first responders, to assist with transportation, carrying essential belongings, and navigating obstacles. It’s important to communicate any specific needs or requirements to ensure that appropriate assistance is available during evacuation."
There are even sources that say being friendly with neighbors can help the overall health and well-being of senior citizens.
"Strong social connections with neighbors may help reduce the negative health effects of living alone, researchers at Rutgers University say."
So make it a point to get to know your neighbors. You never know when you'll need a helping hand...or that cup of sugar.
