Should Maine have Semi-Professional Stone Skipping Leagues?
Sure, there are some odd sports out there.
As odd as the sport of Curling is, there's totally a scene for it here in Maine. For instance, Belfast has a curling club. Brooms, ice, big heavy stones... they have it all. You see cribbage leagues, kickball leagues... And even though candlepin bowling has lost a lot of it's mass appeal here, there are still leagues and tourneys.

But there's one crucial summer activity in Maine that folks are totally missing the boat on... Skipping stones. Around Maine, no one seems to be spear-heading the idea of throwing rocks for sport. Think how cool you used to think you're older sibling was, when they could whip that stone across the pond and have it skip like 8 or 9 times?
There occasional contests, but no leagues.
Just recently during Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor, there was a rock skipping contest. Almost 50 men, women, and children participated. Cary Stone (no pun intended) completely stole the show with a throw that made some 20 skips across the water. I don't care what anybody says, it takes skill.
Sure, it also involves a bit of luck. But if you're a person that can snake 20+skips out of a rock, you should really be finding a way to monetize that skill. That said, why doesn't Maine have any rock skipping leagues, or even semi-pro events. It seems in other states it's kind of a thing.
It seems there's some actual interest in it.
Someone on Reddit recently posed the question. And many of the comments came from people who were eager to join such a club or team. All we need is someone with good marketing skills, that's also an aggressive planner. Me? Not so much. I'd throw some rocks though.

Even if nothing like this ever happens in Maine, I will absolutely keep throwing stones on my own. I'm actually not that bad at it. I can even skip some pretty rough stones, not just perfectly flat ones. Not to mention, the perfect skipping stone can't be too flat. You need some heft. And a decent arm. But most of all, just enjoy it.
