There's been some crazy progress in Bangor's downtown.

A while back, we posted an article about Bangor getting a new transit hub in the heart of downtown in Pickering Square, right adjacent to the parking garage. Back in July, there were some plans revealed, and a computer rendering of the proposed building. Work began almost immediately in September, and now things are looking pretty sweet.

Obviously, there was a lot of hubbub about putting this facility in this location. Some folks feel it's become a bit of a problem area for Bangor. But by and large, it's agreed that something needed to be done in that area to keep up the much-needed service of Bangor's bus system, while also meeting the needs of downtown.

It will be a huge improvement over what's been there, which is nothing.

This new building will add some much-needed features to the downtown area. Such as easy-to-find public bathrooms, places to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer while waiting for buses. Additionally, the building will be totally compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Again, this has been a hotly contested area of Bangor. But hopefully, a spot like this will bring more positive changes to the landscape and alleviate some of the existing problems. The main hope is to make that area of downtown safer and to attract more people to the downtown area.

There's still a way to go. The hub isn't expected to be finished until the end of this year, but photos show that it's coming right along. There are pillars, beams, and electrical cabling being put down too. It's going to be cool to see how it all shapes up in the coming months.
