As Marden’s Moves Out Of Wilson St. Location In Brewer, Many Wonder What Will Go In There Next?
As is often the case when iconic businesses close down, or in this case move locations, questions always arise as to what will go into that space after the old business leaves.
A lot of folks in the Brewer area are wondering just that, as the legendary 'surplus and salvage' shop Marden's gets ready to close their location at 564 Wilson Street in Brewer to open a new spot on Springer Drive in Bangor on March 16th.
The property, which has been listed recently on a number of real estate websites, is a lot bigger than most folks are aware of, so the scope of what "could" go in there has potential for more than meets the eye.
Most people look at the parking lot and the building, but there are acres and acres of land attached to the property, if someone had the vision for something larger than is there right now, it could be done.

Porta & Co. says the space actually includes over 50 acres of land, along with the pre-existing infrastructure of the building.
"87,500± SF retail opportunity on the high-traffic Wilson Street corridor, one of Brewer’s premier commercial thoroughfares with strong visibility and connectivity to the greater Bangor market. This offering includes 59± acres of land, ideal for redevelopment, expansion, or mixed-use concepts with exceptional frontage along a key retail destination. Positioned within a growing retail center just minutes from I-395 and the Penobscot River crossing into Bangor, the property benefits from robust daily traffic exposure and proximity to national tenants and local services."

With space like that available, there's been a lot of talk about whether some bigger, well-known retailers might be considering a buy in Brewer.
Trader Joe's is always a name that gets mentioned. Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops are often thrown out there as possibilities. Then there are those who would like to see a Panera Bread in Penobscot County.
One name that's often mentioned by Mainers as a "wishlist" business when stores close down (as it was Bed, Bath & Beyond switched locations, and even during Burlington Coat Factory's most recent move) is Costco.
According to a recent article on Yahoo, there are even ways in which you can petition the Costco company to consider setting up shop in your neck of the woods.
Officials with the City of Brewer say they do not have any information on what might be coming, and say that there are no pending permits or development plans that have been submitted for the space yet, but they can confirm that the property is up for sale.
The asking price for the property is $3,700,000.
And while they did not have details regarding what's in store for the old Marden's location, they did say to keep an eye on the Wilson Street area, as there are some cool things that will be happening in Brewer in the coming year.
What would you like to see go into the old Marden's location?
