Why Some Maine Residents Should Return Their Stimulus Check
So far, many of us have been issued stimulus checks by the United States government. Now, it appears that some people may want to pay back the Internal Revenue Service for their latest $1,400 check.
According to Kiplinger, there are at least three people who should return their latest stimulus checks to the government.
Who Should Return Their Check?
1.Non-Resident Aliens - These are people who are not US citizens, do not have Green Cards, and has not been living in the country for the needed amount of time. However, if someone is a "resident alien" they are able to keep their checks.
2. Dead People - If a person died before January 1st of 2021, they are not eligible for a third stimulus check. Obviously, in this case, it would not be the person returning the check. It would be their relatives. Additionally, the $1,400 that is given to each dependent is also not available for a parent who died before 2021. However, if the person filed jointly, and the other parent is still alive, that money is available. Also, the surviving spouse of a member of the US military can keep the check.
3. Those Who Don't Want / Need The Money - In theory, the third round of stimulus checks was meant to be more of a bail-out than a stimulus. As a result, it is suggested that people who did not face economic hardships due to the pandemic not keep the money. According to Kiplinger, some people may feel guilty about keeping the money if they don't need it. Something tells me that sentiment is not very common, though.
How Do You Return Your Check?
If you got a physical check, you can mail it to the IRS. For residents of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont, you can mail your check to: Andover Internal Revenue Service, 310 Lowell St. Andover, MA 01810
If you already cashed your check or you got a direct deposite, you can send a check or money order to the above address. Write it payable to "US Treasury". Also, not that it is for the "Third Economic Impact Payment" and include your social security number.

Let's face it, not many people are going to return their checks over the fact that they did not "need" the money.
There is also a rumor that some people may end up getting a fourth stimulus check. Obviously, if we hear more about the potential for another check, we'll tell you all about it.
