It was the end of January, following a pair of terrible storms that dumped a huge amount of snow and then a huge amount of freezing rain across the state when the Green Meadow Farm suffered an awful blow; the barn housing about 50 of their animals, including cows, pigs, chickens, and a donkey, collapsed under the weight of all that wet snow.

While many emergency responders and folks from the community rallied together in the driving rain to rescue the animals, 4 cows were lost in the accident.

According to the Penobscot Bay Pilot, a cow named Galaxie was the last to be pulled from the barn.

"More than two dozen cows and pigs waited hours to be rescued after a barn collapsed in Union during a rain/snow storm on January 26...Since then, the community has been working hard to return the farm to its previous productivity...."

The folks at Green Meadow Farm say so many other local farmers have stepped up to help out.

Unfortunately, Galaxie did not make it. Despite their best efforts, the cow passed away over the weekend.

Hope, however, has not been lost, as the farmers and community continue to try to rebuild.

The PenBay Pilot went on to say a gofundme page had been set up for the farm.

"Money raised will go toward replacing any equipment, tools, farm implements, care and well being of the remaining livestock, rebuilding a new barn, cleanup, etc."

Volunteers were able to secure the back end of the barn with some boards pulled from the rubble, and take steps to make the structure safe for the animals again.

We wish them all the best of luck as they strive to get back on their feet and commend the community for coming together the way they have, to help.
