Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Over the weekend I slipped on my glass slippers and headed to the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see Disney’s new live action ‘Cinderella’. This movie runs just under 2 hours and is a family, drama, fantasy. The film is rated PG for mild thematic elements. The film stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Bella Heathcote, Helena Bonham Carter

Summary:

This story follows Ella from the time she is born into a family with adoring parents living an idyllic childhood through the loss of her parents and clandestine meeting with the prince.  Add a little magic and bibity bobity boo the story is told.

Review:

This version of Cinderella thanks to the strides we have made in computer animated animals they were able to sticks to many of the original themes in her friends and helpers.  Where this takes a different turn from the original, much like Maleficent, you get to live more of the characters natural family life with them first and in Cinderella’s case you get to see her loss.  Also, in the newer versions of these fairytales the heroines are loved for the strength of their character not their looks. Add to that Cinderella is not damsels in distress. In fact she actually gets the chance to save her counterparts from some of the bad things life is foisting on them. Refreshing. In fact, the only thing that was a little weak to me was Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy godmother.  Carter’s acting style always seems a little unnatural to me and they had given her some kind of dental veneer I found distracting. So on a scale of 1-10, I’m giving ‘Cinderella’ a 9.
