Authorities closed down Route 180 in Clifton (at both ends, Route 9 and the Pyles Rd.)  for quite some time Wednesday afternoon following a deadly crash that took place in the area of the Rebel Hill Road earlier in the morning.

According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened just after 10 AM when one SUV heading towards Otis crossed the center line at a high rate of speed and collided, head on, with another smaller SUV.

"The smaller SUV received extensive front-end damage and was forced off the road. The larger SUV rolled over several times before catching fire. The lone occupants of both vehicles were killed in the crash. First Responders initially thought there may be additional occupants, but due to the fire and extensive damage, it could not be immediately determined."

Members of the Penobscot Sheriff's Department, the Fire Departments in both Eddington and Holden, the Maine DOT and the Maine DEP are helping to map out the area, reconstruct the crash and figure out what led to the collision.

The entire incident is still under investigation. The road is expected to be shut down for a while as crews work to remove the debris from the roadway.
