At the end of September two of the places folks had typically relied on for relief from the elements during the cold months, had already announced they would not be running warming shelters this year.
In the light of some funding issues that were keeping some places from opening up, the City of Bangor made some emergency funding available to some organizations to help them with their operations. Organizations interested in receiving that money had to apply for the funding last month.

David Warren, Administrative and Communications Manager for the City of Bangor, says it's finally been decided which organizations would get that funding for this year.
"Two groups will receive the funding: Brick Church and Together Place. Each initially received a $30,000 appropriation to operate a warming center. The City Council on Monday then appropriated another $30,000 for each of them. So both Brick Church and Together Place are receiving $60,000. It was determined that the full $60,000 was needed by each to help with operational costs."
This is the list, so far, of places folks in Bangor can go to get warm this winter, most of which are opening this weekend.
The Brick Church on Union Street in Bangor.
With a capacity of about 70 people, the Union Street Brick Church open for overnight guests starting November 15th, from 6 PM to 7 AM. They're also open a couple days a week for meals and showers and to get essentials.
The Mansion Church at 96 Center Street
This warming center opened November 1st, and runs from 6 PM each evening until 7 AM. Typically, they've been able to offer space for 25 people, but were in the process of some renovations to their basement area, in hopes to double what they can offer this year.
The Sanctuary Warming Center at Together Place on Second Street
This warming shelter is hoping to open by November 21st. They will run 7 PM to 7 AM daily, providing 40 people a place to go and sleep, get snacks, and breakfast.
During the day, folks can take advantage of other warming services like the Bangor Public Library, Jericho Road at the River Church on Center Street, The Shaw House, The Hope House and the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, as well.
Folks can also dial 211 or click here for a list of services available across the state.
