According to the Bangor Fire Department, firefighters from six local fire departments, along with representatives from the DEP will be on site at the waterfront taking part in a special training this week.
"Crews from Bangor Fire, Brewer Fire, Hampden Fire, Holden Fire, Eddington Fire, Orrington Fire and Maine DEP will be participating in spill containment training on the Penobscot River over the next four days. Training includes deployment of containment booms within the area of the Sea Dog. The docks are still open and accessible for use."

The Maine DEP often works hand-in-hand with local fire departments in the case of hazardous spills, according to their website, so the more they can train together, the better.

"There are five responders on-call statewide on a twenty-four hour basis. Each responder is equipped with a fully stocked response vehicle and has access to regional response equipment at all times. Each response vehicle is equipped with the necessary equipment to respond to transportation emergencies including highway, rail, shipping, retail oil distribution, and residential oil and chemical emergencies. DEP responders regularly assist local fire departments, police departments, and emergency management agencies in dealing with oil and hazardous materials emergencies."
So if you see them along the Bangor waterfront this week, do not be alarmed; It's just practice.
