Brewer High School Senior And Her Boss Jump Into Action After Patron Goes Into Cardiac Distress At Sunday Brunch
When Brewer Senior, Abby Sprague, showed up for her shift as a server at Mad Kat's Restaurant this past Sunday, she had no idea that saving a life would be on her "to-do" list for the day.
But according to restaurant owner, Kat Markwith, that's exactly what she did.
According to Markwith, it all started on Sunday, April 26th, when one of their regulars, who had come in for his usual brunch, went into cardiac distress.
"Everything was normal until it wasn't. At 10:15, he went into Afib, his heart stopped, and he died on our floor."
Markwith says that's when the staff, and even some other patrons, sprang into action.
"Two amazing customers helped monitor while my very heroic server, Miss Abby, and I performed CPR until paramedics arrived."
Markwith says Abby, who's been a part of the Mad Kat team since they reopened for business a couple of months ago, was CPR certified through a program at UTC.

"She was amazing! She did chest compressions while I did mouth-to-mouth for 6 min until paramedics arrived. She's a hero!"
Markwith says after the EMTs arrived, they suggested everyone evacuate the building, so her attention shifted to helping families exit the restaurant to give emergency crews time and space to do their job.
Ultimately, the man was transported to a local hospital, where she says they are trying to stabilize him for surgery.
Markwith says she thanks her staff and the patrons for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during Sunday's event. The restaurant was closed for the rest of the day, following the incident.
They did address the emergency in a post on the Mad Kat Facebook page, to which one customer, who had been on hand with her family and kids and watched what went on, expressed her appreciation for how the event was handled:
"... Witnessing someone go into distress is frightening, especially with children present, but your team responded with such calm, professionalism, and urgency. The way your staff quickly stepped in, performed CPR, and managed the situation was truly remarkable. Just as important, the environment you maintained helped keep everything from becoming chaotic, which made a big difference for my kids. They were able to stay calm because of how composed and in control your team was. It’s clear that your staff is not only well-trained but also deeply compassionate. You turned a very scary moment into something that felt handled and supported, and that means more than I can express..."
Markwith says she's very proud of how the staff dealt with such a trying situation.
"To my staff, you were amazing and brave and handled yourselves with poise and strength."
She hopes everyone will take some time to think of those involved, especially the patron who is now at the hospital, and send some good thoughts their way.
"Please, please take a moment to send positive vibes to this wonderful man and his family."
As for Abby Sprague, Markwith says she believes the Senior has her sights set on nursing school, after graduation, a job her boss says she'll be more than qualified for.
"She will be great at it. Very kind, compassionate, and smart."
We're told the restaurant will reopen for business on Wednesday.
