Want This Gigantic Free House in Calais? There’s Only One Small Catch.
Who wouldn't want a free house?
These days, houses are going bananas. The real estate market has been off the chain for a couple of years in a row. And while things are finally starting to cool off just a smidge, a free house would still be the best price of all, am I right? $0.00 is still less than even $1.00, and you don't even need that to buy this gigantic estate in Calais.
The McGlashan-Nickerson House is up for grabs down in Calais, right next to Red Beach. The place is huge. 5400 square feet of historic goodness. It's one of those houses you could easily get lost in. And again, the house is going for the huge price of zero dollars, but of course, there's a small catch...
Technically, you won't get to own the house.
So here's where the catch comes in. The house is a historic landmark, and the National Park Service is in charge of the property. What they're hoping is that someone will accept a 60-year lease on the house. In exchange, you'd be willing to foot the bill for the upkeep of the property. There's a deeper explanation at the site carrying the listing, check that out here.
The house sits on 1.5 acres and also has an additional 750 square foot carriage house as well. It's also slated for mixed-use, so you could start a bed and breakfast, or a summer residence, or live there full time. there's a lot that could be done to make it work for you.
Technically, the deadline has passed, but the NPS has extended it to try and attract a few more entries. Sound like this fits your life? Good luck!!
