WalletHub’s 2026 ‘Best State Capitals to Live In’ report goes beyond government status, analyzing how well each capital supports everyday life.
The study compared all 50 state capitals across 48 metrics—including affordability, economic stability, quality of life, education, and health care—using data points like cost of living, crime rates, and K–12 school system quality to determine the overall rankings.

According to the report, Augusta ranked 49th overall out of 50 state capitals, with only Jackson, Mississippi, placing lower.
The city came in 42nd for affordability, 46th for economic well-being, 40th for education and health, and 43rd for quality of life—all contributing to its near-bottom overall ranking.
Augusta also landed in the bottom five in the report for restaurants per capita, attractions, and median household income when adjusted for cost of living.
Meanwhile, the report’s top five state capitals—ranked from fifth to first—are Boise, Idaho; Madison, Wisconsin; Atlanta, Georgia; Raleigh, North Carolina; with Austin, Texas claiming the No. 1 spot overall.

And there you have it! According to this recent report, Augusta is the 49th best state capital to live in for 2026.
