Does Maine Have More Walmarts or Targets?
There are so many of these retail giants across our country—and right here in our Pine Tree State—but which brand has more locations?
It might seem like there’s one of these on just about every corner, but we wanted to dig a little deeper and look at the actual numbers.
So, with that in mind, how do we find out how many locations each brand has across the country and here in Maine? Did we go out and count them ourselves?
To find out which retail giant has more locations in Maine, we visited their official websites, where each has a store directory that shows how many stores are in the state and where they’re located. From there, we counted the Maine locations and also noted their nationwide totals, making it easy to compare the two.

Well, with all that said, what do the numbers look like nationwide? When it comes to Target versus Walmart, who has more locations?
Nationwide, Walmart has more locations than Target. According to their websites, Walmart operates 4,605 stores in the U.S., while Target has 1,978.
Alright, now that we’ve covered the national numbers, what about here at home? Are there more Walmart or Target stores in Maine?
According to their websites, Walmart has 25 retail stores in Maine, made up of 19 Supercenters, 3 Discount Stores, and 3 Sam's Clubs. As of April 3rd, 2025, Maine has six Target store locations, based on the Target Store Directory.
And there you have it—overwhelmingly, there are more Walmart locations in Maine than Target.
