There was once a popular phrase: ‘As goes Maine, so goes the nation.’ That’s proving true again—but this time, instead of elections, it’s about beer.

Maine and Mainers love beer—and honestly, that might even be an understatement. And as it turns out, the beer we love most here in the Pine Tree State is also the favorite in more states than any other across the country.

So how do we know what the most popular beer is in America, in Maine, or really anywhere? Was there a survey or study we missed?

A recent study by Coffeeness used YouGov's Popularity Ratings to compile a list of widely recognized beer brands, ensuring the focus stayed on beers with strong national presence and consumer awareness. They then analyzed Google Trends data across all 50 states and D.C. to determine which brands had the highest relative search interest in each state, offering insight into regional beer preferences based on consumer curiosity and online engagement rather than direct sales.

Well, with that cleared up, what is the most popular beer in Maine that also happens to be the most popular beer across the United States?

According to a recent study by Coffeeness, which highlights ‘the most popular beer brands across the U.S.,’ the top beer in Maine is also the top choice in 30 states: Miller. In a press release, Coffeeness shared the following regarding the results:

Miller's widespread appeal likely stems from its accessibility, consistent flavor profile and strong marketing presence. The brand has positioned itself as an authentic American classic, with campaigns often centered around themes of friendship, hard work and simple pleasures.

And while it’s not directly stated in the Coffeeness press release, it’s safe to assume that when they refer to the Miller brand, they’re talking about the brand as a whole.

That includes Miller Lite, Miller High Life, Miller Genuine Draft, and Miller64, all under the same umbrella.

And there you have it—here in Maine and throughout much of the country, it’s Miller Time, and there’s no denying it.

What do you think of Coffeeness' results? What’s your favorite beer, and what do you think Maine’s most popular beer should be? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
