As many Mainers struggle to make ends meet this month in the wake of the government shutdown and the delay of SNAP benefits, local stores, both large and small, are stepping up to support people in need.

Convenience stores like Roger's Market in Hudson and Village Variety in Glenburn announced on their social media pages that they were implementing "Pay It Forward" bags to help those who are having difficulty buying the things they need this month.

"We will hold this bag at our register for anyone who wants to donate any money or their change to help those struggling with buying necessities due to loss of EBT/SNAP benefits. This cash will be used for those who do not have enough balance on their card to cover the rest of their cost, or help feed a family that doesn't have any balance left at all. It will not and cannot be used toward alcohol, lottery, cigarettes, or tobacco purchases."

They're not alone in their efforts. Larger local corporations like Hannaford Supermarkets, based out of Scarborough, are putting money toward the effort of battling food insecurity, making a massive donation to food cupboards in the area.

According to a recent news release, the company announced that they donated $400,000 to several food relief organizations across Maine and our neighboring states, to help ease the burden of the increased need they are seeing this month.

"The investment from Hannaford will help food banks across New England and New York increase their capacity to provide fresh, nutritious food to those who need it most. Including this most recent donation, Hannaford has invested more than $1.8 million in food security programs in its communities over the past year."
