A Maine State Limit on Alcohol at Home?

Me? Not so much. I'm more of a beer drinker, so I keep the fridge stocked. Except when I get to use my "garage fridge" in the winter... Which just means I leave beer on a shelf in my unheated garage. But I have plenty of friends who keep an area in their house set up at all times for imbibing in delicious adult beverages.

Although, it's funny. I saw online that for a hot minute, New York state seemed poised to put a limit on how much alcohol you can own in your home. It seems on point actually, for a state that has already outlawed wood and gas stoves. You can't burn anything. But the alcohol limit got pushed down in their Supreme Court. But it got me wondering about Maine...

Is there a limit in Maine?

Not at all. For all intents and purposes, you can buy as much as you can afford at any authorized liquor store. Trust me, I have some friends who look like they could literally open a package store in their house. Bottles upon bottles, in rows along the wall in their dining rooms.

We love to drink in Maine. Good, bad, or indifferent. We get plenty of drinking done. So to that point, not only is there no limit on how much you can own, there's no real limit as to how much you can buy. Your bank account and level of self control is all you have. However, there is a limit to how much you can bring into Maine from out-of-state.

You can' just bring in as much as you want, ironically.

I assume this is so Mainers don't just cruise down to New Hampshire and buy all their booze tax-free. It doesn't mean you can't buy some, but you have to abide by that limit. You can buy up to 400 fluid ounces of malt liquor, or just over 3 gallons. Wine and spirits you can bring in up to 4 liters of each.

3 gallons of beer isn't as much as it sounds. It's basically about 4 six packs. Something tells me that if you're coming into Maine on vacation or for a weekend fishing/hunting trip, you're going to have more than 4 six packs of beer. On the other hand, you may want to familiarize yourself with the laws, as the penalties can be steep. But in general, you're pretty much free to do as you want, booze-wise around Maine. Drink up!
