I'm not that old, but retirement is closer than I'd like to admit.

This year, I will turn the big 5-0. I can't say that I feel a whole a lot different. Other then the usual aches and pains that go along with not being 25 anymore. But in most cases, I'll gladly trade the aches and pains of this age for the utter lack of maturity and life experience I had to acquire through my 20s. I'm not anxious for those days to return.

My wife and I talk all the time about what we'd like to do with our lives when we wind things down. Things like whether we should sell our house and downsize, or move someplace warm. Luckily, there's still some time to think about what we want to do. But the will come eventually. Or will it?

There's some rumblings in Washington DC about when we get to retire.

There's a group of bipartisan Senators in Washington that are offering up all kinds of ideas to keep the social security program going. You hear in the news all the time that it seems like it's always got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. And Angus King is leading this group with one suggestion we're all gonna hate.

One of the proposals is that the retirement age be upped from 65 to 70. When I was a kid, it was 62. And even still can be in some cases. Heck, you can retire whenever you want, but it'll all affect what your ultimate benefit is. But adding another 5 years to people's work lives seems... well, crappy.

It's feels like making up to the window at the BMV, only to be turned around because you forgot a piece of paperwork. Now, it's not likely to catch steam, and it's only one of many other suggestions, but become comfortable with the possibility that one solution to our issue, is just to make you work even longer.
