Drunk people driving is ridiculously scary.

Years ago, before my wife and I got together, I dated a girl who loved to drink. A lot. Not to say I have a prudish attitude toward drinking, but she definitely could drink me straight under the table. that by itself isn't necessarily a problem, but she had zero issues with getting behind the wheel and driving which used to scare the bejesus out of me.

We had full-on fights when I would try and take her keys or whatever. Somehow, she never got in an accident and was never arrested. It was astounding. The funny thing is, most of her friends were the same way. that was the first time I noticed just how many people were a little too comfortable with driving drunk.

Mainers do it so much, we dominate the scene for impaired driving.

One just has to stand in the parking lot of a bar at 1:00 am to realize just how often it happens. Or how many times have you tried to corral keys from friends after parties or whatnot? But this isn't just some sort of informal title we've earned. According to WGME, Mainers are the worst in all of New England.

Just since the pandemic began, there have been over 1,400 OUI-related crashes in Maine. In just two years. That's insane. It's not just booze either. Mainers are smoking weed behind the wheel, under the influence of opioids or meth. It's crazy. All this federal data points to us being wholesale irresponsible when it comes to driving under the influence.

It's been a crazy world the last couple of years, for sure. But when police are pulling people over at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning, there's a bigger problem that may need to be addressed, but that's a separate issue. In the meantime, call a cab. Call an Uber or a Lyft, or just stay home.
