When the new combined school facility opens in Newport in August of 2019, the once familiar high school mascot may not be as it once was.

According to the AP, officials are "on the edge" as to whether or not to change the logo that has featured the head of a Native American warrior imposed over an arrowhead, to something different.

Officials say the name Nokomis, which originated long ago with  indigenous people to America and then became popular within a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, will remain.

The logo used for years was not on the school's Facebook page when we looked.  The logo pictured below was featured on the page.

How do you fell about this?  Do you think that the logo used for many years was offensive to Native Americans, or, do you think that it promoted their heritage?

If you're a Native American, how do you feel about this?
