Summary:

Set in a futuristic post-war Chicago. The story tells of a new cast society with has been set up by a compassionate group to ensure peace.  Survivors in the city have been divided into 5 factions based on their predispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the Intelligent. At a certain age teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their faction or switch to another - for the rest of their lives. Tris Prior an Abnegate chooses to become a warrior, surprising her parents. As the story unfolds it comes to light that she is divergent meaning she holds all the predispositions and therefore cannot be controlled which if discovered marks her for death as a threat to the society. But she is not the real threat.

Review:

Although Divergent is compared to Hunger Games, outside of a post war plot the story is nowhere near as good or understandable. For one thing they never really explain how it comes to be that these people, who are supposed to be us, have become so specific to their natures.  Add to that, the political takeover being planned that divergents would get in the way of is never really well explained either.  Over all I left feeling that if this was a good book it didn’t translate well to screen.  The lack of understanding of the motivations behind most of the action and plot lines leaves the viewer hanging, unengaged and makes much of it drag. Cute girl and hunky guy aside on scale of 1-10,  I’d give Divergent a 5.
