Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Last night I grabbed my topographical map of Mars and headed into the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see ‘The Martian’

This is a Sci-fi adventure, drama that runs hours and twenty minutes. The film is PG-13 for some strong language, injury images, and brief nudity and stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena.

Summary:

This story covers the lives of a group of astronauts on a manned mission to Mars. Everything is going according to plan on the planet until an unexpectedly strong storm forces the team to abandon their mission. During the evacuation one crew member, Mark Watney, is struck by debris in route to the ship, is lost and presumed dead. Reluctantly but with no other choice the remaining crew leave for their long trip back to earth. Fortunately and unfortunately, Watney survives and is now tasked with contacting NASA and if he can somehow surviving and until rescuers can return.

Review:

Let me kick off this review by saying Ridley Scott has directed some of my favorite films of all time and I now have a new one to add to his list. That said, I can’t give Scott all the credit since the writers creating these characters were exceptional so I must add kudos to the book author Andy Weir and screenplay writer Drew Goddard. In an era of so many movies resting their hopes on action and effects without the benefit of depth of its characters and story this film is a breath of fresh air.  Not that is doesn’t have amazing effects, it does.  But what draws you in and makes the 2:20 feel like an hour and a half is the amazing story and the brilliant, real feeling characters. Matt Damon gives such a believable blend of strength, intelligence, humor and vulnerability that you will be completely taken in. I think another element that lends to this films credibility is that the science is sound and nothing is so over the top that the illusion is disrupted. Well done. On a scale of 1 – 10, I am giving ‘The Martian’ a 10.

Show me everything playing right now at the Bangor Mall Cinemas
