Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Over the weekend grabbed my passport and headed to Vienna via the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see ‘Woman In Gold’. This dramatic movie runs just under 2 hours and is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and brief strong language.  The movie stars Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Brühl, Katie Holmes, Tatiana Maslany

Summary:

This film is based on the true story of Maria Altmann, a Jewish refugee living in the United States. Once forced into exile from her native Austria by the Nazis and stripped of all her family belongings. In her 80’s becomes aware that due to a change in the laws in Austria there is a chance she might possibly get back a painting of her favorite Aunt done by a famous Austrian painter. She enlists the help of a friend’s son who is a young lawyer and whose family also hailed from Austria and the two take on the Austrian government to recover artwork they believe rightfully belongs to her family.

Review:

I think this is one of the best performances I have seen from Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren is always amazing. This movie does a wonderful job making you understand the incredible assault the Nazi regime Austria’s Jewish citizens and showing their life prior to the invasion and then how those who could ran for their lives. Shameful, there is no other word. Being based on a true story and the fact that the wheels of justice move amazingly slow I thought they did a good job knowing when let the story slow down to take it in and when to skip ahead. This is a moving story with the decent conclusion that will still leave you feeling a little sad and unsettled.  Still these events should not be swept under the rug nor forgotten lest we fall into the pit again. So on a scale of 1-10, I’m giving ‘Woman In Gold’ a 9.

Show me everything playing right now at the Bangor Mall Cinemas
