They’re Decking The Halls Of Downtown Bangor
They're decking the halls of Downtown Bangor this week and gearing up for the holiday season. Tuesday morning marked the arrival of the holiday tree to Westmarket Square.
According to the City's website, the 30-year-old, 36-foot tall Norway Spruce came from right down the road in Sprague's Nursery. The Sprague family has donated a holiday tree to the city annually for 3 decades.
"The size of the tree, which is 20 feet wide, requires considerable planning and coordination for it to be installed in the square...Stringing the lights requires the use of three bucket trucks. Those lights and the star have been provided by the Rotary Club of Bangor since 2020."
It's estimated that about 8,000 lights will be used to illuminate the tree, but this year, there won't just be the lights on the tree to look at. They're adding a new feature.
"An added feature this season is an animated holiday light and music show in the square that is sponsored by Hollywood Casino and coordinated by the Downtown Bangor Partnership and the City. Scott Stitham, with the Collins Center for the Arts, is assisting DBP with the installation and programming of the light show."
Dozens of volunteers from a number of local organizations and businesses including, Penobscot Job Corps, the Girl Scouts, and Fusion Bangor, have already begun to decorate downtown.
There will be a couple of opportunities to check out the tree lighting, the first of which will happen on Plaid Friday, at a kickoff party hosted by the folks from the Downtown Bangor Partnership and the Hollywood Casino.
There will also be a formal tree lighting at the end of this year's Rotary Club's Festival of Lights Parade.

Visitors will have a second opportunity to see the lighting when Santa visits during the Rotary Club’s Festival of Lights Parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 (in case of inclement weather, the parade will be pushed back a week and held Saturday, Dec. 14).
