North Country Associates, the owner Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center in Bar Harbor, announced that the facility will be closing by April 26th of this year.  Here's why.

According to an official announcement released yesterday, there are "many factors", including "the inability to maintain an adequate average daily occupancy necessary for sustained viability."

The announcement directly mentioned the Mount Desert Island Hospital Swing Bed Program, which is a Medicare program where patients can receive "skilled care" before hopefully, returning home.

The release also mentioned Maine's minimum wage, which has now risen to $11 an hour, and that "coupled with the competition from the hospitality industry has hampered our ability to recruit and retain the necessary number of staff people to provide quality care."

As yesterday's notice from North Country Associates said, it truly is a sad day for the 58 employees who currently work at Sonogee on the shore of beautiful Frenchman Bay, and the area citizens and their families that must now find another facility.  We truly wish everyone the best.
