A Searsport company has finished installing 1450 3 by 5 foot panels on top of Mount Desert Island High School.  It is part of a local group's effort for MDI to become energy independent by 2030.

The new panels will generate 435 kilowatts of clean energy, which could power 3000 refrigerators at the same time, according to an article in the Bangor Daily News.

MDI High School has begun an agreement with the installers, Sundog Solar, and will pay a little under 9 cents per kilowatt hour for six years, when a new agreement will be set. Until then, this will save the school almost 8 cents per kilowatt hour.

An official ceremony will take place this Wednesday, the 18th, at 12:30 at the high school.
