Need New Wheels? Bangor Police Bike Auction Happening Saturday

It's a right of passage for most kids; there's nothing quite like the feeling of riding a bike through your neighborhood on a summer's day, the wind blowing past your cheeks as the world goes by.

These days, a new bike can be expensive. But if you're creative and handy, you might have another option!

For a fun and affordable way to hit the road on two wheels this summer (without the motor) make sure you check out the Annual Bangor Police Bike Auction this weekend. Taking place Saturday June 12th, the auction will be held at the Bangor Parks and Rec building (647 Main Street).

Bangor Police Sergeant, Wade Betters, says the department has been holding this auction for over 30 years, and this year they have over 150 bikes to choose from. They even have some bike parts up for grabs.

"Bidder registration and the auction preview starts at 9:00am. The auction begins at 10:00am, and continues until when we run out of bikes."

As far as prices for the bikes at auction, Betters says it can depend, but it's usually well under what it would cost to get a new one.

"$5-$50 for most bikes. High end bikes can go for over $100. Most of these bikes are abandoned-found during drug raids, seized during an investigation and never claimed. Nearly all are in need of repairs."

The money raised from the Bangor Police Department Bike Auction goes directly into the Bangor Police Department community service fund.

Better says the Department uses money from that fund for community projects.

"Holiday decorations-events-pet and toy drive supplies-buying food and supplies for the kids at Shop with a Cop-Turkey Drive donation, police related items to hand out to school age kids- various items for the annual National Night Out."

This will be a cash or local check only situation, so make sure to come prepared.
